What’s The Difference Between Waterford Crystal and Crystalline Glass?
The short answer is the make up of the crystal with lead oxide content. Take for example Waterford Crystal which
has a lead oxide content of over 33%, whereas full lead crystal is classed in excess of
24% lead oxide content.
Full lead crystal is made up of Silica (sand) Potash (ashes) and usually Red Lead (lead oxide)
The characteristics of Crystalline Glass is below the 24% mark and is commonly known as lead free crystal,
or soda lime. All glass contains a certain amount of lead oxide, but nothing to be concerned about as
regards leaching from acidic drinks or alcohol being stored for a long period of time.
The sparkle will still be there, the brilliance is still there, the weight is still there, but the lead oxide will be in a diminished capacity.
In fact, Waterford Crystal carries a line of Waterford Crystalline Glass which is in the Marquis patterns suite and are usually
used for general purpose gift ware and drink ware and is much cheaper to manufacture than full lead crystal.
Did you know for example, you can purchase a set of 4 Waterford Crystal Crystalline Goblets for around $39.95 on Amazon and not worry about them breaking, or breaking your pocket book either.
These prices are a big difference than the cost of full lead crystal, even though they are manufactured by
Waterford Crystal..
